Nov. 4, 2018 (Sun.)

English Speaking Guide – for the entire trip!
Only ¥3,200 per person! – details below.

Located in southern Fukuoka Prefecture, Chikugo is known for traditional handicrafts and beautiful nature. We’ll experience the local culture and ways of life that have remained unchanged by tourism on this one-day bus trip!

Kurume Kasuri Studio – Aizome (indigo dye) Experience

Kurume Kasuri, a hand woven textile that gets its color from aizome (indigo dye) is recognized as an important intangible cultural asset. After touring the Tomihisa Orimono Studio, we’ll dye a handkerchief using traditional methods. Yours to keep!

Bamboo Grove Walk

See spectacular scenery along the 11.5 km Miyama/Mt. Kiyomizu hiking trail. We’ll walk just a short portion and in 30 minutes we’ll be immersed in a mysterious bamboo thicket!

Local Delicacy Lunch

Enjoy a buffet lunch of Japanese-Italian fusion dishes made with locally sourced fresh ingredients at this bright and airy restaurant, Sakura Terrace. Sorry, but special diet menus are not available.

Woodwork Town Visit

We’ll walk along streets lined with Edo-styled building in which many woodwork and furniture studios and Okawa kumiko (lattice) workshops are located. It’s one of Japan’s largest displays of wooden furniture. The area celebrates “Craftman’s Day” on Nov. 3 and 4 (10 am onwards).

Japanese Paper-making Workshop in Yame

Yame handmade washi, a local variety of Japanese paper, is a designated special traditional craft of Fukuoka with a history of over 400 years. At the Yame Traditional Crafts Center, participants will use the bark from kozo (mulberry tree) to make Japanese-style postcards by hand.

Why so inexpensive?
The cost of this tour has been drastically reduced, in return for cooperation by tour participants with a short written survey to be conducted on the bus on the way back to Tenjin. Information gathered will be used by tourism related offices to promote the areas visited on this tour in the future. The surveys are anonymous. Note: photos from the tour may appear on the Fukuoka Now website, SNS and elsewhere. The ¥3,200 participation fee only covers the cost of the lunch, entrance fees and workshop fees. Transportation, the guide and other parts are included in the participation fee, so this is a great value.
