Gangnam Style – Beppu, Kyushu STYLE! Exclusive Report

We talked by phone with Naoki Takamoto, the leader and main character of the Beppu, Oita version of blockbuster YouTube hit “PSY / Gangnam Style”. Takamoto who is originally from Osaka moved to Beppu six and half years ago where he operates two darts bars. When he learned that two of his customers who met in his bar were getting married he decided to do something special for them. Takamoto, already a fan of the Korean performer PSY thought a Gangnam Style remake could be done in Beppu. So he called on his bar’s staff, friends, customers, and friends of the engaged couple to learn the dances and fill the roles. Practices were held twice a week for two months usually from 2am~6am. Many of the participants were from the APU (Asia Pacific University, in Beppu) including Refa the lead female who is a second generation Korean Japanese resident.

Some of the most difficult shots included the shredded paper shower and the monkey shots. The most enjoyable scene was the blue sky shot with Takamoto and twelve dancers. Although entirely a volunteer project there were some expenses such as costumes which were purchased in Korea. Takamoto friends’ wedding was on Oct. 20 where they performed Gangnam Style live and then released the video on YouTube on Oct. 21. The entire crew is completely burned out but might regroup for another project in the future. Takamoto says the success of the project was huge team effort – Gangnam Style!
