Ippudo Opens in the Big Apple
Since its debut in Daimyo, Fukuoka in 1985, Ippudo has grown into a successful chain of 34 “gourmet” ramen shops around Japan. On March 31, Ippudo opened a spacious and reportedly stylish shop in NYC’s East Village. The length of the noodles has been shortened for clumsy gaijin eaters, but otherwise Ippudo’s famous akamaru and shiromaru are said to be very similar to the originals, but priced at $13.00 a bowl!

New Subway Stop!
It wasn’t too long ago that a proper submarine sandwich could be enjoyed in Fukuoka – but unfortunately that sub sank. Long-term foreign residents may remember the good old days when Shakey’s and A&W had shops here too. Well, Subway is officially back! The first of hopefully many shops in Kyushu opened its doors on Meiji-dori on March 28. Positioning itself as the healthy fast-food alternative, the menu offers five low-calorie sandwiches and ten Fresh sandwiches – available in half (15cm) and full (30cm submarine) lengths. Prices are reasonable too; a 15cm Turkey Breast is just ¥390! 1F Sun Bldg., 3-3-6 Tenjin, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka. Tel: 092-771-0203

Halal Cuisine Served!
Ali and his wife proudly opened the doors of Zaeka, an Indian and Pakistan restaurant located in Maizuru (just behind Oyafuko-dori), on Feb. 28. Zaeka offers a wide variety of curries, tandor dishes, nan and samosa. In particular though, it is perhaps the only restaurant in Fukuoka to offer certified Halal foods. Great news for resident or visiting Muslims! Lunches from ¥680. Tel: 092-732-7513

Mexican Marriage
Salaryman, Mitsushiro travelled to Mexico to learn the ways of Mexican masked wrestling. He won some matches, and also the hand of a mask-maker’s daughter, Ivonne. The couple are now married and are living in Fukuoka, but Mitsushiro no longer wears a mask.
