- AIDS Day 2009 in Fukuoka

This graph shows the number of HIV-infected persons and AIDS patients in Japan. There were 1,126 cases of HIV infection and 431 cases of AIDS reported for the year in 2008, making a combined total of 1,557 people – the highest ever annual figure in Japan. In Fukuoka City alone, there were 20 cases of HIV infection and 8 cases of AIDS reported, making a combined total of 28 people. And that's not all – these figures count only those who were tested. That means there are more people going about their daily lives without knowing that they have been infected.
How About You?

Everyone is aware that most cases of AIDS are transmitted through sexual relations. Some people overlook the dangers, however, by claiming they're not at risk because they have only one partner. That in itself should give pause for thought. Even if a couple has an exclusive relationship now, if either
one of the partners has had sex with just one other person in the past, the potential for infection is no longer zero.
Prevention
Preventing infection means preventing HIV from entering your
body. Use a condom whenever you make love.
1. Always use a condom during sex.
2. Do not use a condom more than once.
3. If you put a condom on the wrong way, dispose it and use a new one.
4. Do not wear two condoms at once. Doubling condoms make them easier to break due to friction.
5. It is easy to tear a condom with your nails, so be careful.
6. Keep condoms in a cool and dark place so they are not exposed to heat or sunlight.
7. Check the expiry date on the package before using.
If you're worried that you might be infected, see the next page for information about testing.
Get checked
You have to be tested to know whether you've been infected. Your privacy will be strictly maintained, so if you're worried that you might be infected, don't hesitate to make a call.
Testing is done anonymously. You will not be asked for your name and address.
■Testing for AIDS and genital chlamydia infections is free. You will have to pay for a syphilis test (¥480).
■Reservations are not required for the regular test. They are required if you want your results on the same day, however. (Chuo Ward Health Center)
■Results will be provided to the person tested about 1 ~ 2 weeks after the test. Results are not provided by mail or telephone.
※AIDS or HIV infections can be definitely confirmed three months after the date of possible infection.
※ Same-day testing is that testing in which the results are provided on the day of the blood test. If definite confirmation is required, the results will take one week to provide.
