Making Whoopee this Holiday Season

Not heading home this Christmas? Don't lose heart yet. You might just end up enjoying yourself more away from home hearth. Japan offers one of the world's most peaceful Christmas experiences. Besides the absence of inquisitive relatives, there're no frenzied shoppers fighting over must-have toys and the word 'romantikku' fills the papers! So, stroll blissfully through Fukuoka's fairy-lit streets. Enjoy pretty Christmas displays at Bayside Place, Fukuoka Tower, Canal City and other department stores. El Gala is having a carol concert in front of their lovely tree on Dec. 19. Your favorite bars will provide a plethora of carols (from punk to Hawaiian) and parties, but book early for dinners on the 24th. Off-Broadway and Xaymaca are both popular for their traditional-style Christmas turkey dinners. If cooking yourself, order a turkey from Meijiya, Iwataya Z-Side or Makii. Get a creamy French 'bouche de noel' at Dames de France, a nut-filled German 'stollen' at Sailer, or a heavy British puddin' at Meijiya. Deck out your home from a huge, fun selection of decorations at Christmas World, or In-Cube's 3F. Churches around town will fill with festive folks (and couples on dates!). The pretty Josui-dori Catholic Church has mass from 18:00, and Spanish mass is held from 20:00 at the very 'international' Minoshima Catholic Church on Dec. 24. Finally, partake in the New Year's Day traditional shrine visits and don't miss the (not-so-traditional) selection of great movies coming up this season!
