Wan Ochazuke Dining Tenjin Area
For the uninitiated, ochazuke is a simple Japanese dish made by pouring green tea, dashi, or hot water over rice and garnishing with savory toppings. Tsukemono (pickles), umeboshi (sour plums), nori (seaweed), and shake (salted salmon) are some of the most popular toppings. Usually enjoyed towards the end of a meal, ochazuke is warming, filling and easily digested. Also, it's popular as a midnight snack and hangover cure as well! At the recently opened Wan Ochazuke Dining in Takasago, a seven-minute walk from Yakuin Station, you can choose from 27 available varieties of ochazuke. Great care goes into the making of the dashi (bonito and sea tangle broth), which you pour yourself from a pot at your table. High-quality Aizu Koshihikari rice from Fukushima is used because it retains firmness even when mixed with broth. The toppings are also carefully selected and sourced from all over Japan. Pictured here is the best-selling Oyako Shake (Salmon and Salmon Eggs). Each ochazuke contains one-and-a-half standard size bowls of rice, so they are quite filling. Still, some customers order more than one, and at such reasonable prices, why not! While ochazuke is the star here, other dishes, such as their original Spicy Chicken made with 12 herbs, are a nice way to balance the menu. Excellent English language menu with photos available. Non-smoking only.
