For a country that seems enamored with eggs (take Gudetama, the adorably lazy egg) it seems odd that the American concept of eggs for breakfast hasn’t really taken hold. That was until Eggs ‘n Things came on the scene.
This Hawaiian franchise first came to Japan five years ago. Since then, it has been wildly successful and opened stores all over the country, including Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yokohama, Saitama, Chiba, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and Nagoya. The Fukuoka branch (which opened on July 18th, 2014) is their only shop in Kyushu.
Eggs ‘n Things’ used to have long, offputting queues, but these have finally died down, making it easier to enjoy delicious eggs and pancakes! The Fukuoka store is now focusing on giving customers such a good experience that they’ll want to come back again and again.
This place wants to spread a love of Hawaiian food all around the world, and one of the things that Hawaii does best is eggs. So Eggs ‘n Things serves eggs served just how you like them: scrambled, sunny side up, over easy, over medium, over well done, or over hard. You can then choose from a selection of accompaniments, such as Portuguese sausage (their most popular choice), tuna, Canadian bacon, spam, turkey bacon, and so on. Finally, you can pick either rice, fried potatoes or toast.
We sampled their steak & eggs, accompanied by buttery golden toast. The combination of seasoned, tender steak and gooey egg made for a delicious dish. It’ll really set you up for the day! Prefer a fluffier form of egg? Try one of their sunshine yellow omelets! The omelet menu is really quite exhaustive – long enough to keep any omelet aficionado happy. They also have a menu section called “Specials ‘n Things”, which includes eggs Benedict, french toast and loco moco (hamburger on a bed of rice topped with a fried egg and gravy – a very Hawaiian dish).
The locals keep coming back to this restaurant because of their famous pancakes: fluffy golden cushions which are either topped with cream, nuts and your choice of fruits and sauces, or made with chocolate chips, fruit or nuts inside. They’re as pretty as they are tasty: many people seem to come to Eggs ‘n Things just to take photos of them!
Egg ‘n Things’ most popular pancake dish includes strawberries, a serving of cream larger than a baby’s head and a sprinkling of chopped macadamia nuts; this treat is sweet without being sickly. It’s big enough to share between two – that is, if you can bring yourself to share it… If you’re not a pancake fan, then you might like to opt for a waffle or crepe.
Those not in a breakfast mood can peruse the dinner menu. The selection is rather extensive, and includes Hawaiian Surf & Turf, ahi poke (raw tuna salad – a Hawaiian family dish), and garlic shrimp.
Feeling in the party mood? Try one of their colourful cocktails (served with little umbrellas, as befits the Hawaiian theme)!
Sit inside and soak up the laid-back, Hawaiian-themed interior, or relax on the terrace (blankets are provided to keep you snuggly in winter).
Egg ‘n Things is the perfect choice for diners with a passion for eggs, or, indeed, delicious things. We certainly won’t be able to stay away for long…
