20,000 candles are set up along the banks of the Muromi River in one of the most spectacular lantern festivals in Kyushu. This year’s theme is ‘Ganbare Kyushu ~praying for earthquake disaster reconstruction~’. Amongst the lantern installations will be a 5,000 lantern recreation of Kumamoto Castle. The event is also celebrating the 70th anniversary of the popular Japanese comic ‘Sazae-san’. Food and drink stalls will be positioned near the attractions and a donations box for Kumamoto earthquake relief can be found in the festival’s headquarters. Head here to see the map.
