The origins of this traditional textile can be traced back to 1235, when a merchant named Mitsuta Yazaemon and a monk named Shoichi Kokushi travelled to China during the Sung period. Hakata-ori developed in Japan when the two returned and began passing on what they had learnt during their trip. This event is sponsored by the Hakata-ori Manufacturer’s Association and will feature an exhibition of around 100 items, including bags and obi. Visitors will also have the chance to purchase goods and participate in workshops during the festival.
