Hawaiian Festival in Fukuoka 2016

START: Jul 22, 2016 END: Jul 24, 2016

Hele mei hoohiwahiwa (come celebrate)! This year marks the 35th anniversary of Fukuoka and Hawaii becoming sister states/cities (in 1981), and to celebrate there will be a Hawaiian festival in downtown Fukuoka. Konishiki, a Hawaiian-born Japanese–Samoan ex-sumo wrestler who is now a popular musician in Japan, will attend the event. The third governor of Hawaii, George Ariyoshi, will give a speech at the opening ceremony on Friday, after a Japanese drumming and Hawaiian dance performance. There will be several performances over the weekend, such as Hawaiian music performances. Some highlights include: live painting by James Dover (Fri.), Japanese drumming performance by people with disabilities (Sat.) and a children’s dance performance organised by Kyushu’s Down syndrome organisation. There will be many booths, including one hosted by Eighty Eight Tees, a popular Hawaiian t-shirts brand, and a painting booth by the artist Ozaru. Complete a survey at the JTB booth for the chance to win a pair of tickets to Hawaii! At the secondary venue (Hakata Daimaru Passage Hiroba), there will be several workshops, including a ukulele workshop.
