Children dressed as demons (covered in soot, wearing straw skirts and headpieces) carry a 20 m long, 400 kg rope around town. The event starts and ends at Hisadomi Kumano Shrine. This Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the prefecture is a memorial for the dead who could not attain nirvana.
