Children dressed as demons (covered in soot, wearing straw skirts and headpieces) carry a 20 m long, 400 kg rope around town. Starts and ends at Hisadomi Kumano Shrine (soot applied from 8:30). This Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the prefecture is a memorial for the dead who could not attain nirvana.
