Welcome in the summer with this 300-year-old festival, which is one of the three major Gion festivals in Kyushu. Men carry and pull huge elaborate floats around a set course. At night, the floats are illuminated with lanterns. On Jul. 23, dress up in yukata, the traditional Japanese summer dress! Rent a yukata or wear your own at Patria Hita (1-8-11 Sanbonmatsu, Hita, Oita) (¥500 if you bring your own, ¥2,000 to rent) (inquiries 090-3906-6604). More information of the festivities on the 23rd here, and the 24th here.
