The Itoshima Taketori Monogatari fun-filled bamboo light-up festival will be held to celebrate July’s Tanabata (Star Festival). The event pays homage to the famous Japanese folktale Taketori Monogatari (Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter) and will have six thousand bamboo garden lanterns dotted around Marutaike Park to create a magical atmosphere. The lanterns are made out of bamboo collected from forest thinning in the area. The Itoshima Youth Committee is helping with the event to raise awareness about the problems arising from bamboo thickets in the local area.
