Overseas Artists in Residence at Itoshima Studio Kura – July 2016

START: Jul 23, 2016 END: Jul 24, 2016

This month, Studio Kura, located in the beautiful Itoshima countryside, will present four exhibitions introducing its current AiR (Artist in Residence) artists; Elise Broadway, Enriqueta Vendrell, Marijke Wijgerinck, and Ien Dobbelaar. The Studio Kura AiR program offers foreign artists a chance to draw inspiration and create works from the surrounding Japanese rural scenery, as well as end their journey with their very own exhibition at the studio’s gallery. During the artist’s four or eight-week long stay, the program also provides a meeting point between AiR participants and artists or art enthusiasts from the local community. From 15:30 on Jul. 23 (Sat.), there will be an opening party and talks by the artists.

Elise Broadway
This Pennsylvania-based painter and visual artist presents “Studies of Hiroshima”. Fascinated by the construction of space, she will present a series of paintings and drawings using gouache and graphite. Through the imagery of Itoshima’s cuisine and domestic dining settings, she will touch upon the theme of local identity.

Enriqueta Vendrell
This Catalonia-based visual artist combining drawing and installation presents “Landshat”. Her works concentrating on landscape and its change, she will portray the local rural landscape by using Indian ink, with hints of her hometown, which is rich in history, tradition, customs, and high ethnic consciousness, reflected in her works.

Marijke Wijgerinck
This Netherlands-based sculptor, sketch artist and art teacher presents “While Walking”. She has showcased her minimalistic and conceptual art internationally, her works centering on skin as a border between the outside and inside world, landscape and memories. She will present “3D sketches” using washi paper and fig leaves to create a bowl to “hold memory”.

Ien Dobbelaar
This Netherlands-based photographer, visual artist and illustrator presents “Distance and Time”. Her hometown, Leiden city, is known as Nagasaki’s sister city, and home to Rembrandt who inspired many acclaimed painters. During her stay, she will react to her own photos with drawings, and the surrounding rice fields will be her starting point.
