The Quay Brothers Phantom Museums

START: Mar 25, 2017 END: May 7, 2017

The Brothers Quay, influential stop-motion animators Timothy and Steven Quay, bring their unique animated movies to Japan for the first time this March. Sometimes described as gothic and surreal, the themes of the brothers movies touch upon the occult and folklore, often including very little dialogue so that the audience has to rely on the visuals to interpret the story. They are also fans of weird architecture which they incorporate into their films. The Museum of Modern Art, Hayama will host this retrospective of the brothers’ work. In addition to the films, you can also see the process from which they were created from initial sketches to detailed storyboards through illustrations, models, and videos. The films will be broken into two groups with the dates staggered between the two. Showtimes begin at 18:30 and will run for about an hour.
