Fukuoka's first subway line opened in twenty-seven years ago in 1981, but today, the "Subway" that local bread-eating gaijin have been waiting for has finally opened their doors in Tenjin. Hooooray! Pictured here is My (Holland) and her hubby Jay (USA), two of the first customers to sink their teeth into Subway's freshly baked buns. Fukuoka's first Subway shop (there are plans for more across Kyushu) is located on the north side on Showa-dori, about 100 meters east of Watanabe-dori. Positioning itself as the "healthy" fast-food alternative, the menu offers five low calorie sandwiches, and ten "fresh" sandwiches - available in half (15cm) and full (30cm submarine) lengths. Prices are reasonable too; a 15cm Turkey Breast is just ¥390.

Hopefully you've already heard or seen the ad in this month's issue of Fukuoka Now, but we're throwing a big party, and you're invited! Yes, Spring has finally sprung, and to celebrate Spring and the launch of this new website, we're inviting all of our readers to join us at the chic and stylish "With the Style Fukuoka" near Hakata Station. If you've yet to attend a party at this venue, you're in for a treat. Provided the weather is fine, guests can enjoy the spacious patio with reflecting pool, cabanas and palm trees. And yes, this is less than a 10 minute walk from Hakata Station (past Yodobashi Camera). No advance tickets, but entrance is limited to the first 150 persons, so don't arrive too late and dress to impress! Champagne, cocktails, wine, beer, cigars and finger foods offered inside and outside by the reflecting pool, with cool tunes in the background. Special lucky draw for prizes including a free dinner at With The Style Fukuoka, and two Apple iPods! All this for just ¥1,500!

Fukuoka Now magazine made its debut on Dec. 25, 1998, and our first website was launched a few months later. At the time, it was considered technologically advanced. It was refreshed once in 2002, and today we will begin the roll-out of the third revision. What you see now is just the beginning of an ambitious plan to provide tons of information and cool communication tools for everyone with an interest in Fukuoka and the surrounding Kyushu region. Please be sure to access this site later this month as new sections and features become available. Meanwhile, feel free to bookmark us and poke around the new site. Enjoy!
