The five private-sector broadcasters based in Fukuoka City released their financial results for the fiscal year ended March 2010, which showed they have been unable to stem the decline in ad revenue that began with the economic downturn in the fall of 2008. Four of the five reported overall revenue declines. Creating a more difficult environment is the switch to terrestrial digital broadcasting in July 2011, which has required some companies to increase their capital investments. As a result, three of the broadcasters reported earnings declines.
