Fukuoka City is no longer accepting bids from companies and private enterprises looking to purchase the site of the former Seika Ichiba (market). The 8.7 hectare plot of land is located close to Fukuoka Airport and JR Hakata Station. Instead, the city is looking for an applicant who will use the site in a creative, innovative manner. It has not been revealed which companies bid, but it is understood that JR Kyushu and at least one major trading company submitted proposals. The city has set the asking price at ¥11.8 billion. In order to enter the bidding process companies had to commit to using the site to create a bustling multi-purpose space that can be used for events and also during times of disaster. The city will decide which bid to proceed with this July. Source: Yomiuri Shimbun, 3/16/2018
