Canon to Open New Factory in Miyazaki

Canon announced plans to construct a digital camera factory on the former site of Minami Kyushu University’s Takenabe-cho campus. The company also revealed that they plan to hire around 500 employees from the local area for the new establishment, which is set to open in 2019. The university campus, which previously stood in Takenabe-cho, moved to Miyakonojo-shi in 2010. The local economy was hit badly by the relocation and finding a way to utilize the site has been a challenge. It is hoped that the new factory will revitalize the area, put a halt to the decreasing population, and increase people’s awareness of the town. The factory is set to cover 270,000 square meters, and the town is expected to invest around ¥3.5 billion into the project. However, the sale of the land and governmental subsidies will likely put that figure at closer to ¥800 million. Source: Mainichi Shimbun, 9/9/2017
