Cherry Blossoms to Bloom on 3/23 in Fukuoka – Forecast

Weather data company Weather Map released its annual sakura (cherry blossom) forecast on Thursday, Feb. 4. The forecast predicts that somei yoshino, the most popular type of cherry blossom in Japan, will begin blooming on Mar. 23 in Fukuoka. The remaining prefectures in Kyushu will begin seeing blooms later in the week, spreading gradually from Fukuoka down to Kagoshima Pref. by Mar. 30; the blooms will peak between Apr. 2 (Fukuoka) and Apr. 7 (Kagoshima). Fukuoka is predicted to be the first area in Japan to see sakura, but the mild winter means that the buds will bloom slightly later than usual (although it may feel a lot later, since last year’s bloom was earlier than usual!). So areas experiencing particularly warm winters, such as Kochi, areas along the Pacific coast of western Japan, and Kyushu (excluding areas near the Sea of Japan), can expect late blooms. The first bloom (and full bloom) dates for other Kyushu cities are as follows: Oita 3/25 (4/5); Nagasaki 3/27 (4/5); Saga 3/27 (4/4); Kumamoto 3/26 (4/5); Miyazaki 3/27 (4/5); Kagoshima 3/30 (4/7).
