City Agrees to Build Nursery School in Hakata Park

Fukuoka City has agreed to lend a parcel of land in the municipal Nakahie Park (Hakata Ward) to a private nursery school operator. The aim of the move, which was made possible by recent revisions to the National Strategic Special Zone Act, is to add more nursery school capacity in the city’s urban core. City Hall has budgeted ¥140 million in fiscal 2016 to subsidize the construction of the facility, which is expected to provide service for up to 90 children. It is slated to open in April 2017. Despite the City’s best efforts to reduce nursery school waiting lists, Hakata Ward currently has 76 children waiting to get into nursery school—the most of any of Fukuoka’s seven wards.
