On May 25, Fukuoka City announced plans to team up with two automobile R&D firms and a transportation company to develop Japan’s first-ever fuel cell truck. The truck will run on hydrogen extracted from the biogas generated by sewer sludge. The partners in the project are Tokyo-based Tokyo R&D Co., its affiliate Pues Corp. and Tenjin Chiku Kyodo Unso, a local transportation company known for its yellow delivery trucks. The project timeline is three years. Next year, the team plans to refit a 2-ton diesel truck with a high pressure H2 tank and fuel cells, and in 2018 it aims to conduct driving tests on public roads. Regarding the endeavor. Mayor Takashima indicated his desire for the project to “help establish Fukuoka’s brand as the leading hydrogen-based city.” Source: Fukuoka City press release, 5/25
