Cormorant Fishing Suspended in Chikugo

The traditional cormorant fishing that takes place on Chikugo River was suspended again for the second consecutive year. This is expected to have a negative impact on tourism in the area. The practice of ukai was cancelled last year after heavy rains hit the northern Kyushu area. People began catching ayu (sweetfish) on May 20 this year, but rising water levels and the flow of sediment in the river made it hard to ensure people’s safety. Torrential downpours also caused damage to three yakatabune boats along the river. Fishing will resume once the water level has gone down. Source: Television Nishinippon Corporation (TNC), 7/11/2018
