On Aug. 24, JR Kyushu announced that the DENCHA (Dual Energy Charge train), a two-car battery electric multiple unit (BEMU), will start running from Oct. 19, 2016. The DENCHA will run on the Chikuho Main Line between Wakamatsu Station and Orio Station, making four round trips per day (full schedule here). The DENCHA should reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce noise and vibrations. It could save power cost by up to 50% compared to current diesel trains. JR Kyushu hopes to add more DENCHA trains to more routes in future. Source: JR Kyushu press release, 8/24
