The Fukuoka National Highway Office under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation announced on Jan. 12 plans to extend the Hakata Bypass. Six lanes stretching across 3.3 km from Shimobaru to the Tatara Chugakko Nishi intersection (Tatara Junior High School West intersection) will open on March 17. The five lanes that run 1.9 km from the Tatara Chugakko Nishi intersection to the Matsushima intersection will also be expanded to six lanes. The main purpose of the bypass is to ease traffic congestion on the National Route 3 (Kokudo 3-go) as well as improve logistics in the region by creating better accessibility to Fukuoka Airport and the Port of Hakata.
