Final Negotiations for Fukuoka to Host G20

Final stages of negotiations are reportedly taking place regarding the possibility of Fukuoka to host the G20, which Japan is committed to stage for the first time next year. Originally, preparations were being made for Osaka to serve as the host. However, Osaka’s bid for the 2025 World Expo led to feelings of dissatisfaction amongst other local authorities at the prospect of the city staging two major global events in a relatively short period of time. Attempts are underway to secure accommodation facilities and venues around Fukuoka City. The Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk has been put forward as a key site for the gathering. Initial concerns as to whether or not there would be enough suitable rooms for leading figureheads attending the summit resulted in the city putting out a call asking major Fukuoka hotels to carry out refurbishments. The G20 summit is set to take place between June and November 2019. Source: Asahi Shimbun, 2/16
