As of Oct. 1, foreign visitors who purchase alcohol from sake breweries, wineries, and distilleries, will be able to take their wares back home without having to pay alcohol or consumption taxes. The tax exemptions apply to foreign visitors who purchase between ¥5,000 and ¥500,000 of alcohol from Tax Bureau-approved sake breweries, wineries, and distilleries. Sales continue to rise as Japan-made liquor grows ever more popular overseas. With this move, the government not only aims to boost the number of foreign visitors, it also hopes they will make their way to outlying areas to buy liquor. Source: http://www.fiba.jp/
