Fukuoka City Kindergartens to Close

Fukuoka City will close all eight of its municipal kindergartens by 2018 due to a drop in the number of young children using the facilities. The population of 3-5 year olds in the city peaked at 53,000 in 1975, but has been decreasing ever since. Although the city’s municipal kindergartens have been in operation since 1953, in recent years the number of private nurseries have been increasing. It has been decided that these private facilities have the capacity to meet the demand for local preschool education. Source: Yomiuri Shimbun, 3/15/2018
