Fukuoka City Mayor Shares Proposals for a New Urban Ropeway

Fukuoka City Mayor Soichiro Takashima gave a talk on Dec. 5, during which he clarified the local government’s proposal for a ropeway to connect JR Hakata Station to the waterfront area near Hakata port. The city hopes the Fukuoka Skyway Initiative will make the waterfront a more attractive investment opportunity for hotels and commercial facilities. The area around the port is currently home to facilities used by large numbers of visitors to venues such as Marine Messe Fukuoka and Sunpalace. Mayor Takashima explained how the ropeway could improve accessibility to areas of the city that now lack good public transportation facilities. Citing the example of similar services in other cities, Takashima also noted that the skyway would be able to transport large numbers of people and cost less than a subway covering the same distance. The proposal will be discussed in further detail with the legislative assembly. Source: Yomiuri Shimbun, 12/6/2017
