Fukuoka Handicrafts Aimed at Overseas Visitors

Fukuoka City announced that local manufacturers have created three special products that draw on traditional-style handicrafts, which they will promote to overseas visitors. The city is looking to break into new markets to combat a decrease in demand amongst locals. The initiative has developed a cat-shaped Hakata ningyo (doll), a Hakata-ori cosmetics pouch, and an accessories kit. The city took the decision after looking at the results of a questionnaire conducted at Fukuoka Airport last year, which gathered feedback from tourists visiting Japan. Interest in Hakata ningyo and Hakata-ori peaked in the second half of the 1970s but has since waned. This project aims to buck this trend by targeting tourists visiting Japan from overseas.
