Governor Calls for Suspension of Kagoshima Nuclear Reactors

The governor of Kagoshima, Satoshi Mitazono, has requested that Kyushu Electric Power Co. immediately suspend operation of the two reactors at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant. These reactors are two out of only three reactors currently in operation in Japan. Mitazono cited the concerns of his electorate following the two major earthquakes which hit Kumamoto in April 2016. Kyushu Electric Power Co. is expected to give its response to the request by early September 2016. This is the first move of its kind by a prefectural governor in Japan since the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Source: Kyodo news, 8/26
