JR Kyushu has established the JR Kyushu Farm Oita agricultural company in Oita City for the cultivation of Chinese chive, known in Japanese as nira, in the area. One of the railroad’s group companies has taken a 97% stake in the company, with local agricultural concerns contributing the rest. They plan to sell the crop to the local JA cooperative, as well as use it in their own restaurant business.
