From April this year, the Kitakyushu City Board of Education will significantly increase the number of English language classes taught in elementary schools. The government advised schools to gradually add more hours of English study to their syllabus over the next two years, but Kitakyushu decided to start implementing the guidelines this coming semester. The new measures will see third and fourth graders study English for 35 hours a year. The number of hours fifth and sixth graders study the language will increase to 70 hours a year. The move will help children gain familiarity with English from a younger age. Source: NHK News Web, 2/9/2018
