A survey by the Kyushu Economic Research Center shows that as of April 2009, the seven prefectures in the region had roughly 171,000 employees, while municipal governments had about 136,000. Compared to the totals of April 2005, this is a decline of 4.8% and 8.1% respectively. While the employee reductions have been in most administrative departments, the number of employees in those related to business in industry has risen. The center says this indicates local governments have been working to promote industry in their jurisdictions.
