A competition was recently held in France in which top wine sommeliers compared and judged the quality of 550 types of Japanese sake. The results were announced at a sake trade fair in Paris on October 8. The Shichida Junmai Daiginjo Omachi 50 from the Tenzan Sake Brewery in Saga Prefecture was awarded the highest possible ranking, while the Hananoka Junmai Daiginjo Ouka from Kumamoto-based brewery Hananoka was given a special judge’s award. The competition results were announced, as news reports have revealed that Japan reached a deal with the EU that will help remove tariffs on Japanese sake which will increase the amount of sake exported to European countries, and expand the industry in general.
