Land Ministry Announces Plans for Quake-Damaged Kumamoto Road

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has officially settled on an alternate route for National Road 57 in Kumamoto Prefecture. The road was cut off by a landslide after the Kumamoto Earthquakes in April. Situated to the north of Minami Aso Village, the new 13 km road will start at Hikimizu in Ozu Town and terminate at Akamizu in Aso City. About 4 km of the road will consist of tunnels. After explaining the plan to local citizens, the ministry will begin conducting geological surveys and taking measurements for elevated bridge construction. The new road will intersect in several places with Milk Road, the road currently serving as the Route 57 detour, and it could become a new trunk road for motorists traveling to Oita Prefecture from the cities of Kumamoto and Aso.
