Fukuoka City has begun a trial to asses whether or not bicycle rental services can help reduce the number of bicycles left neglected on the streets. The experiment will be run with Merchari, a bike sharing system operated by Tokyo-based Mercari. Once customers have downloaded the company’s app they can rent the bicycles at ¥4 per minute. Merchari bikes were first introduced to Fukuoka in February this year. By the end of August there will be approximately 130 Merchari stations throughout Fukuoka. Mercari’s President and Chief Executive Officer announced that that the availability of bicycles, buses, and trains can help reduce the number of cars on the road, helping cities further develop in the process.
