New Sports Arena Opens in Kurume

A new multipurpose sports arena, one of the largest of its kind in Kyushu, has opened in Higashikushihara-machi, Kurume City. The Kurume Arena has a total floor space of approximately 18,800 square meters and is home to a gymnasium that can accommodate an impressive 3,000 spectators. It will also be a venue for a range of different sporting disciplines, including martial arts and archery. The exterior has been designed to resemble traditional Kurume kasuri cloth. Two-thirds of the ¥8.6 billion construction cost was covered by Fukuoka Prefecture while Kurume City paid for the remaining third. An event was held to celebrate the opening of the arena on June 3. A training room located on the second floor will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. (Wed. to Mon., standard fee ¥380, student fee ¥200). Source: Kurume Fan, 6/1/2018
