The Fukuoka branch of the Tokyo Shoko Research company announced on June 21 that the number of newly established companies in Kyushu and Okinawa increased by 2.9% in 2017. The study shows a total of 13,286 new companies in the region. This is the eighth consecutive year that a rise has been registered and represents the highest figure recorded since the survey was first taken in 2008. The construction industry has grown in response to reconstruction efforts, which have taken place in Kumamoto following the series of earthquakes that hit the area in 2016. There was also a notable increase in manufacturing and transportation-related businesses. Source: Saga Shimbun, 6/22/2018
