Oil Spill Spreads Inside Hakata Bay

A fire which led to the submersion of a 1,972 tonnes cargo ship off the shores of Hakozaki Futo caused a huge oil spillage that continues to spread around Hakata Bay. Fishermen and city port authorities are working hard to contain the spill, however it has already reached many beaches. Activities such as swimming and clam digging are (for the time being) prohibited in affected areas. The city has confirmed that the oil had spread as far as Marina Town Seaside Park, about 7km south-west of the site where the accident occurred. Photos supplied by a Fukuoka Now reader. One shows Atagohama beach on Thursday and the second shows the same area on Friday morning after cleanup efforts. Fukuoka City has created a webpage with information here http://www.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/bousai/hakatawan.html
