Celebrations were held on July 15 to mark the Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region’s first weekend on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The newly-renovated Oshima (Koryu-kan) Exchange Center, which outlines the historical significance of the area, held an opening ceremony that was attended by a number of guests including Hiromi Tanii, the mayor of Munakata. Tanii spoke of a desire to see people deepen their understanding of Okinoshima. Many guests also visited Munakata Shrine’s Shinpo-kan, which features a display of excavated treasures.
