Saga Prefecture has revealed plans to introduce a new variety of strawberry to the market this winter. The prefectural assembly made the announcement on June 14th. The fruit has taken seven years to develop and is seen as a successor to the popular Sagahonoka strawberry. The new variety, which will be shipped out to distributors from the end of November, are large with a deep red color and sweet flavor. The name of the strawberry will be announced in October. The Prefectural Agricultural Examination Research Center has worked on the project in collaboration with the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives and various farmers. Approximately 160 farmers plan to grow the strawberry in Karatsu City this year. The fruit will hit the Tokyo and Osaka markets in early December. The prefecture then plans to promote the new product in Tokyo department stores next January. Source: Yomiuri Shimbun, 6/15/2018
