Sheep and Goats Graze in Maizuru Park

For the third consecutive year, the Kyushu Branch of the JCCA (Japan Civil Engineering Consultants Association) has organized an event in which sheep and goats can be petted inside Maizuru Park. It’s all-you-can-eat grass and weeds for seven lucky sheep and two goats. The goats even get on their hind legs to trim the low branches of nearby trees. The event is not just for fun or to fill the bellies of these four-legged public servants. It’s an experiment in reducing the cost of weeding grass on public properties. This crack team of grazers is expected to clear an area of about 1,500 m² in one week, munching on approximately three kilos of plant matter each day! You can visit until the 24th of August, from 10:00 to 17:00, on the north side of Sannomaru Square in Maizuru Park.

Ready to move onto greener pastures.

Although they can be feisty, the goats like being petted, especially on their noses.

Guess which side the sheep were on?

The sheep know how to work the crowd.

This is “King” and he weighs 85 kilos!
