Shinmoe-dake Eruption Costs Tourism ¥250 Million

Kirishima City announced that the eruption of Shimoe-dake resulted in sightseeing-related economic losses costing up to ¥250 million so far. The city looked at how the volcano’s first eruption in six years impacted cancellations at accommodation facilities from Oct. 11 to Oct. 23. A total of 29 companies responded to the survey, confirming that approximately 8,194 guests cancelled their bookings, while a further 337 tourists who had planned day trips are said to have abandoned their plans. Meanwhile nine tourist services had as many as 1,864 people cancel day trips that had been reserved. Facilities are now functioning as normal and local officials hope that the surge of visitors that usually arrives with the Autumn foliage will see tourism levels return to normal.
