Statistics have been released for the traditional Japanese department store sales in Kyushu during the New Year holidays. They indicate that sales were flat from the previous year despite cold weather that might have been expected to depress turnout. Some of the department stores reported that sales of upscale items and brand-name products were very good. One industry insider suggested this portends a recovery in individual consumption, as people may be tired of frugality.
