Special Regional Number Plates

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on May 22 that they will introduce a special range of regional number plates into 41 areas across the country this October. The illustrated number plates will feature a range of tourist attractions, special products, and professional sports teams that are representative of different parts of Japan. The Kumamoto plates will include a drawing of Kumamon, while the Kagoshima version will depict Sakurajima, and Oita will feature onsen (hot spring). Drivers who wish to use these new number plates will have to pay an additional ¥1,000 for issuance of the number plates. The existing Road Transport Vehicle Law forbids drivers from using illustrated number plates without permission. Source: Asahi Shimbun, 5/22/2018
