The Kyushu Economic Research Association conducted a survey on 50 items to gain a clearer understanding of the level of public recognition for local specialities from Kyushu, Okinawa, and Yamaguchi. 1,107 people responded to the questionnaire, which was conducted on the internet during June and July of this year. Nagasaki chanpon came out on top with over 90% of people from both within and outside of the local area familiar with the dish. Other foods that had a high level of recognition include Hakata ramen, Sasebo burger, and Miyazaki mango. Participants were not so familiar with brands of rice, a trend that has been attributed to the competition that exists in the industry across the nation. The Research Association has stated that social media could play a role in raising people’s awareness of local food and drink. Which local Kyushu delicacy is your favorite?
