Survey says Kyushuans are Happier than Tokyoites

Although many of us who live down here may have suspected as much, the results of a recent survey by the Kyushu branch of the PR firm Hakuhodo suggest that people in Kyushu are happier than Tokyoites. Despite Tokyo winning the accolade of the world’s most livable city in British culture magazine Monocle’s 2016 survey, its seems that people down south, including those of us in 7th ranked Fukuoka, are happier. In late July and early August, the firm surveyed 250 people ages 18 to 69 in each of the seven prefectures of Kyushu to determine their happiness quotient. Calculated on a 100-point scale, all seven prefectures recorded higher happiness levels than Tokyo’s 54.3 points. Fukuoka and Kagoshima took the top two spots, at 59.7 and 57.8 points, respectively. Questions focused heavily on quality of life issues. Kyushu ran neck-and-neck with Tokyo in questions pertaining to food, clothing and shelter, and even had a nearly 2-point advantage over Tokyo in terms of satisfaction with the culinary environment. Meanwhile, 38% of Kyushuans said they have more time to spend with their family on the weekends, as opposed to 31% of Tokyoites. Source: Hakuhodo news release 9/12
