Tourist Consumption in Kyushu & Okinawa up 21 Percent

The Fukuoka branch of the Bank of Japan announced that spending amongst tourists visiting Kyushu and Okinawa during 2016 reached ¥592.7 billion, a 21% rise from the previous year. The earthquakes that hit Kumamoto last April had a negative impact on tourism, but a dramatic 34% increase in the number of tourists in the region arriving from large cruise ships meant that spending across the year was not affected. Kyushu and Okinawa were above the national average when it came to spending, as well as the growth rate of tourists entering the country. This trend meant that many small and medium-size businesses have prospered. However, the average consumption per person and the number of days tourists spent in Kyushu and Okinawa were slightly below average. Source: Sankei Shimbun, 9/16/2017
